Dar Anika Overview

Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of riads in Marrakech, and honestly? Dar Anika gets it right in ways that surprised me. It’s tucked away on Riad Zitoune Lakdim – you know, that narrow street that branches off from the main drag where all the tourist restaurants cluster. The thing is, once you duck through their heavy wooden door (and I mean really heavy, like ancient-fortress heavy), you’re suddenly in this completely different world. The courtyard hits you first – that classic riad setup with the fountain in the center, but theirs actually works properly and doesn’t sound like a dying dishwasher, which is rarer than you’d think.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve restored the place without making it feel like a museum. The zellige tiles are gorgeous, sure, but they’ve got that lived-in patina that tells you this building has stories. The rooms – well, mine overlooked the courtyard, which meant I could hear the fountain at night instead of the chaos from the street. That’s actually pretty perfect for light sleepers. The staff here seem to actually live in Marrakech, not just work there temporarily, if you know what I mean. When I asked about getting to the Saadian Tombs (which are basically around the corner, by the way), the guy at reception gave me this whole spiel about the best time to go to avoid crowds and which entrance the tour groups don’t use. That’s the kind of local knowledge you can’t fake.

The breakfast situation deserves a mention too – they serve it on the rooftop terrace, and honestly, watching the medina wake up while you’re drinking actual good coffee is worth the stay alone. You can see the Koutoubia minaret from up there, but also all these little glimpses into people’s daily lives happening on other rooftops. It’s not Instagram-perfect in that sterile way, it’s just… real. The only thing that might bug some people is that the rooms can get pretty warm in the afternoon – the thick walls keep things cool mostly, but midday in summer, you’ll want that AC running. Also, like most places in the medina, finding it the first time is an adventure. Pro tip: the taxi can get you to Place des Ferblantiers, then it’s maybe a three-minute walk through streets that all look the same until you spot their little sign. But honestly, that’s part of the charm – you’re staying in a 400-year-old neighborhood, not a Holiday Inn. The 9.1 rating makes sense once you’re there. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but it nails that authentic riad experience without the tourist-trap nonsense.

  • Amazing – Adam from Australia – 23 May 2025 (10/10)

Room, building, staff was amazing location was perfect and close to everything! Staff so good with help and communication.

  • Fabulous felt like home with a caring and beautiful staff – Wayne from United States – 15 May 2025 (10/10)

I loved loved the staff I felt like a VIP. They focused on
The customer not the money or things they were so naturally nice I felt like I was home. It was natural not forced. They were so nice you want to tip them and they gave a tip envelope at first was a turn off, but then realized later it probably was smart because wanted to leave a tip putting it in an envelope made it much more natural without guilt giving some and not others. I would highly recommend this place because it was clean. Romantic felt like home and the staff was superb.

What could be improved: the pool was there, but it wasn’t really encouraged to be used. It felt more like a decorative pool within the riad. The Hamman also was there but we didn’t use it. It seems as if it probably didn’t belong, as if it was more decorative I wouldn’t say I didn’t like it, but was it’s truly a Hammond. Both are there but small. It however, did that take away from more experience loved the entire experience still don’t let us be the determining factor unless this is important to you, but I think in the Medina roads most of the pools and hamman are also very small.

  • Wonderful friendly staff and a great location to the main sights! – Liz from United States – 12 May 2025 (10/10)

The staff went above and beyond to have us feel valued and welcomed. The location is perfect and they were very helpful with giving us places to see and eat!

  • Great location for the Medina, great staff, I’d recommend – Tina from United Kingdom – 8 May 2025 (8/10)

Dar Anika was in an excellent location in the Medina but was surprisingly quiet and protected from the hustle and bustle of the streets. The Staff could not do enough to welcome and help where possible. Everyone was friendly and greeted you with a smile. The breakfast was very nice but I little too large for us. However great value for money. The rooms were very nice and clean.

What could be improved: When we first arrived, we found it a little dark and gloomy on the ground floor but acclimatised and the location and friendliness of staff outweighs this.
We also weren’t aware that the Riad didn’t serve alcohol which maybe should be made clearer. Again we soon got used to this and understand the reasons why. All in all a very nice Riad and great value for money.

  • It was fantastic – Marion from United Kingdom – 7 May 2025 (10/10)

    Location, staff, breakfast all amazing

What could be improved: No alcohol served

  • Exceptional – João from Portugal – 26 April 2025 (10/10)

    Excelent service and staff.

  • It was very relaxing – Caroline from United Kingdom – 25 April 2025 (8/10)

The breakfast was excellent and the staff were all very helpful and their English was very good.
We had a very helpful briefing about restaurants, we were given a map and helpful briefing about where to go sightseeing.
The staff were also very helpful organising transfers such as to the airport.

What could be improved: The jacuzzi pool didn’t work.
There weren’t any towels (upstairs on the terrace) on the beds (like our previous Riad ) which meant we had to use the towels from the room which wasn’t ideal.

  • Exceptional – Yoani from United States – 17 April 2025 (10/10)

The staff was absolutely amazing! I got sick after arriving in Marrakesh and they provided me with different teas, ginger drinks to try to help. They also checked in on my health status every day to see if there was anything they could provide to help. The staff was super friendly, very attentive. Location was great. We had an amazing time during our stay!
