Dar Kamilya Overview
Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of riads in Marrakech, and Dar Kamilya honestly surprised me. It’s tucked away on Derb el Cadi – one of those narrow alleys in the medina where you’ll definitely get lost the first time (even with GPS, trust me). But that’s actually part of the charm, because once you find it, you feel like you’ve discovered this hidden gem that most tourists will never stumble across.
The thing about this place is that it gets the whole traditional riad experience right without feeling like a museum. You know how some of these restored riads are so pristine they make you afraid to touch anything? Well, this isn’t that. The courtyard has that classic Moroccan tilework – zellige, they call it locally – but there’s something lived-in about the space. Maybe it’s the way the morning light hits the fountain, or how the orange trees actually smell like, well, oranges instead of looking like decorative props. The rooms wrap around this central courtyard, which means you’ll hear the gentle splash of water instead of street noise (though honestly, the medina never really goes quiet – there’s always someone calling from a minaret or a donkey cart clattering by on the stones outside).
What really won me over was the attention to details that actually matter to travelers. The wifi works – I mean really works, not that spotty connection you get in a lot of medina hotels. The shower has proper water pressure, which is sort of a miracle when you’re dealing with old plumbing in a centuries-old building. And the staff… well, they know their stuff. When I asked about getting to the tanneries, the guy at reception didn’t just point me toward the tourist route – he told me about the back way through Bab Debbagh that cuts out half the walking and most of the crowds. That’s the kind of local knowledge you can’t fake.
The rooftop terrace is where you’ll want to spend your evenings, by the way. You can see the Koutoubia minaret from up there, and when the call to prayer echoes across the city at sunset, it’s one of those moments that makes you glad you chose this place over some sanitized hotel in Gueliz. Breakfast is served up there too – proper Moroccan bread, not the sad croissants some places try to pass off as continental breakfast.
I mean, it’s not perfect – the stairs are steep (typical for riads), and if you’re in one of the ground floor rooms, you might hear people chatting in the courtyard until late. But honestly? The 9.1 rating makes sense. This is what a medina hotel should feel like: authentic without being uncomfortable, central without being chaotic, and run by people who actually care about whether you have a good time in their city.

Tayab our host was fantastic and did everything we could have wished for. Anytime we needed information and help with daily tasks Tayab was there to make our trip that more memorable.
What could be improved: The property was in an ideal location, short walk from all the main sites and immunities.Private haven in Marrakech – Nora from United Kingdom – 15 January 2024 (10/10)
We loved everything about our stay at Dar Kamilya. The place is brand new but has an old soul. Tayeb brought us freshly made breakfast on the terrace each morning – freshly made bread and orange juice, such a delicious spread. The place is gorgeous and such a nice private haven to get back to after the busyness of the medina. The best part, hands down, was how well Tayeb took care of us. His mother made couscous for us one night and it was the most amazing food we had our whole time in Marrakech. Nothing beats home cooking, especially when eaten on the terrace with tea candles lit and the evening sounds of the city. We can’t wait to come back.
What could be improved: It was cold the first night because we forgot to turn the heaters on, but the blankets were warm and the second night when we turned them on no problem.
