Dar Salam Palm – 2024 Travellers’ choice Overview

You know what? When I first turned down that narrow derb off Rue El Gza, I honestly wasn’t sure I was in the right place. The entrance to Dar Salam Palm is tucked away in one of those maze-like alleys that make the Medina both magical and slightly terrifying when you’re dragging luggage behind you. But here’s the thing – once you step through those heavy wooden doors, it’s like someone hit the mute button on Marrakech’s chaos. The riad opens up into this gorgeous central courtyard with a fountain that actually works (you’d be surprised how many don’t), and suddenly all that street noise just… disappears.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star riad – traditional tadelakt walls, carved cedar ceilings, and thankfully, really good air conditioning. I mean, let’s be real, the romance of sleeping under the stars only goes so far when it’s 40 degrees in July. What impressed me most was how they’ve managed to keep the authentic Moroccan feel without making you feel like you’re living in a museum. The beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in riads), and the bathrooms have proper water pressure – honestly, after a day of haggling in the souks, a decent shower is everything. The rooftop terrace is where you’ll probably spend your evenings, and the view over the Medina toward the Atlas Mountains is pretty spectacular, especially at sunset when the call to prayer echoes across the city.

Location-wise, you’re right in the heart of things but not so close to Jemaa el-Fnaa that you’ll be kept awake by the drummers until 2 AM. It’s maybe a 10-minute walk to the main square, and you’ll pass some of the best spice shops and leather workshops along the way – the staff actually gave me directions to their favorite spots, which felt genuine rather than commission-driven. The only real downside is getting there initially; even experienced taxi drivers sometimes struggle with the exact location, so download an offline map or be prepared for a bit of an adventure. But honestly, that’s part of the charm of staying in a proper riad rather than some generic hotel in Gueliz. The 8.5 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not perfect, but it captures that authentic Marrakech experience while still being comfortable enough that you’re not roughing it.

  • Fantastic – Yash from Netherlands – 21 April 2025 (8/10)

Very charming cute place. Convenient and in a quiet location off the hustle bustle of the Medina. Location is close to an accessible road so not much to walk with luggage. Staff were fantastic ! Very kind polite and went out of his way to make the stay memorable.

What could be improved: Stayed in top floor room and it got little stuffy without aircon. Shower took long time to get hot water.

  • A peaceful oasis to return to after exploring Marrakesh. Tasty Breakfast, Clean and Wonderful Staff. – Eadaoin from Ireland – 8 April 2025 (10/10)

We booked our stay for a long weekend, myself and three friends, girls in our 20s and 30s. We would all highly recommend anyone to stay at Dar Salam Palm. Abdullah was a wonderful host, the most attentive, welcoming and facilitating customer service I have come across. Everyone we met at the hotel were very nice. The breakfast was varied and delicious. The room was clean and the hotel was a peaceful oasis from the hustle and bustle of outside. Great location for exploring the city. We can't wait to return!
