Duplex Riad Abjaou Overview

So I stumbled upon Duplex Riad Abjaou while wandering through the medina’s maze of narrow alleys, and honestly, I almost walked right past it. The entrance is tucked away on this quiet little street called Derbe Ahl Sousse – you know how riads are, they’re like hidden gems behind these unassuming wooden doors. Once you step inside though, wow. The whole place just opens up around this gorgeous central courtyard with that classic Moroccan tiled fountain that actually works (trust me, not all of them do).

What really got me was how they’ve managed to blend the traditional riad architecture with modern touches that don’t feel forced. The duplex rooms are pretty clever – you get this sense of space that’s rare in the medina, where most places feel a bit cramped. The upper level has these beautiful arched windows that let in amazing light in the mornings, and I mean, waking up to the call to prayer echoing off the courtyard walls is something else entirely. The staff here actually knows the neighborhood – they’ll point you toward the best tagine spots that aren’t tourist traps, and they can navigate you through the souks without you ending up completely lost (which, let’s be honest, happens to everyone at least once).

I’ll be straight with you – it’s not perfect. The WiFi gets spotty in some rooms, and the hot water takes a minute to kick in, but that’s pretty standard for authentic riads. What matters is the location. You’re about a ten-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa through these winding streets that feel like stepping back in time, but you’re also close enough to duck into Gueliz if you need a proper coffee or want to escape the medina chaos for a bit. The whole Berrima area is actually one of the quieter pockets of the old city – you’ll hear the usual medina sounds (donkeys, vendors, kids playing) but it’s not the constant sensory overload you get closer to the main squares.

The rooftop terrace is where you’ll probably end up spending your evenings. You can see the Atlas Mountains on clear days, and the sunset views over the medina are absolutely worth the slightly steep stairs. They serve mint tea up there that’s actually good – not the overly sweet tourist version – and the whole vibe is just… relaxed. I ended up chatting with other guests most nights, which doesn’t always happen at bigger hotels. For a 4-star place, it punches above its weight in terms of character and authenticity, though you’re definitely paying for the experience rather than luxury amenities. If you want a real taste of Marrakech without sacrificing too much comfort, this place hits that sweet spot.
