Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of riads in Marrakech, but La Sultana honestly feels like stumbling into someone’s incredibly wealthy great-aunt’s private palace. You know how most hotels in the Kasbah can feel a bit touristy? This place – tucked right on Rue de La Kasbah near the Saadian Tombs – actually manages to feel authentic while still being ridiculously luxurious.

The thing that got me right away was walking through those heavy wooden doors and suddenly everything goes quiet. I mean, you’re literally steps from the chaos of the medina, but inside it’s all flickering candles and the sound of fountains echoing off these incredible zellige tiles. The staff seems to appear out of nowhere when you need them, which is honestly a relief after dealing with the hustlers outside (and yes, they’ll help you navigate that whole situation when you arrive). What really impressed me was how they’ve restored this place – it’s actually five connected traditional houses, so every corner you turn reveals some new courtyard or staircase with hand-carved details that probably took months to create.

The rooftop terrace is where you’ll spend your evenings, trust me. You can see the Atlas Mountains on clear days, and at sunset the call to prayer echoes across the city while you’re sipping mint tea or something stronger. The spa down in what used to be the old hammam is pretty incredible too – I mean, where else can you get a massage in a 16th-century bath house? Just be prepared for the narrow staircases throughout the building; it’s charming but not great if you’re hauling heavy luggage (though they’ll handle that for you). The only minor thing I’d mention is that some of the rooms can be a bit dark during the day – it’s the nature of these old buildings with their small windows – but honestly, that keeps things cool and adds to the whole mysterious atmosphere. If you’re looking for something genuinely special in Marrakech, somewhere that feels like a secret even though it’s right in the heart of everything, this is it.
