So you know how everyone says to stay in the medina for the “authentic” Marrakech experience? Well, honestly, after three trips to Morocco, I’d actually recommend L’Atlas in Gueliz instead – and here’s why. This apartment-style place sits right on Rue Zellaqa, which sounds fancy but is actually this quiet residential street that locals use as a shortcut to Avenue Mohammed V. The building itself has that French colonial vibe (Gueliz was the French quarter back in the day), but inside? It’s been thoughtfully updated with Moroccan touches that don’t feel forced or touristy.

What I love about this place is how it strikes this perfect balance between being distinctly Moroccan and actually functional for travelers. The apartments – and they really are proper apartments, not just hotel rooms with a mini-fridge – have these beautiful tadelakt walls and traditional textiles, but you’ll also find things like reliable hot water and Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every ten minutes. I mean, the little details matter when you’re trying to upload photos or video call home, right? The owner clearly gets that modern travelers want authenticity without sacrificing comfort. Plus, being in Gueliz means you’re walking distance from Carré Eden (great for groceries and that French pastry shop on the ground floor) and about a 15-minute taxi ride to Jemaa el-Fnaa when you want the full medina chaos.

Here’s what really sold me though – the neighborhood actually comes alive in the evenings when locals finish work. You’ll hear kids playing football in the small park nearby, smell tagines cooking from nearby apartments, and there’s this little café two blocks down where the owner, Hassan, makes the best mint tea and will absolutely insist on teaching you backgammon. The 8.1 rating makes sense because while everything works well and the space is genuinely charming, it’s not trying to be a luxury resort – it’s just a really solid, comfortable base that happens to feel authentically Moroccan. Oh, and parking is actually possible here (unlike the medina), which matters if you’re planning day trips to the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira.

  First and fotemote location is spot on. 20-25 minute walk into the Medina and a 5 minute walk to Gueliz with restuarants scattered in all directions.
  I liked that it had a washing machine and normal kitchen facilities to have a breakfast. Ultimately, the Netflix and Amazon prime was great in the evenings relax and enjoy some down time. The air con was good as well as it was a bit cold in the evenings. Houssein was a gentlemen and helped as much as he could. There are small shops around and carrefour is a 5 minutes walk. This was my third time in marrakesh and fair to say it was better than the two other hotel stays. No sewer smell.
  
  What could be improved: The sofa is nice which turns into a sofa bed but unfortunately the sofa bed squeeks and we had to sleep on the floor with the mattress. Also the refrigerator makes a weird noise at night which can wake you up sometimes, this needs to be fixed or replaced. The big shower head was good and the small head too but the bathroom could do with some proper cleaning. We were hoping to relax on the balcony and enjoy the sun, however the sun shines from a different direction and therefore you have very little sun to enioy. The ironing table needs to be replaced, doesn't open fully. Hopefully the owners take action and improve the apartment building for their own benefit, as it has good potential for location.

  The terrace is perfect! Huge and well equipped. It's a perfect place to rest after the whole day of sightseeing. The same goes for the pool. Big enough to enjoy and refresh during hot summer days. The apartment is spacious and the beds comfortable. We parked in front of the building with a guy taking care of the street parking
  
  What could be improved: You can't adjust the proper water temperature. Every few seconds it goes from too hot to cold. The owen wasn't clean. The aircon is just in the living room and impossible to cool the bedroom

  Fantastic location easily walkable to Jemma el Fna in about 20 minutes, but the walk is very enjoyable and you can see lots on the way, also walkable to other souks and Jardin Majorelle.
  
  What could be improved: Unfortunately water shortages in Marrakech affected our stay but this was not a problem that the hosts had any control over, as the water shortage affected the entire city.
