Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of riads in Marrakech, and this one on Riad Zitoun Lakdim honestly surprised me. You know how some places look amazing in photos but then you arrive and it’s… well, not quite what you expected? This wasn’t one of those times. The whole private riad thing isn’t just marketing speak – you actually get the entire place to yourself, which is pretty rare in the medina without paying absolutely ridiculous money.

The location is what really got me though. Riad Zitoun Lakdim is this narrow street that feels properly local – you’ll hear the call to prayer echoing off the walls in the morning, smell tagines cooking from neighboring houses, and actually see locals going about their daily business instead of just tourists with cameras. It’s maybe a seven-minute walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa (I timed it because I’m weird like that), but tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the constant chaos of the main square. The taxi drivers know the street, which honestly makes life so much easier when you’re coming back late from dinner.

What actually makes this place special is the rooftop terrace – and I mean, every riad claims to have a great terrace, but this one delivers. You can see the Atlas Mountains on clear days, and there’s enough space to actually spread out, not just perch on a tiny corner like some places. The three bedrooms are generous too, with that traditional tadelakt plasterwork that feels cool against your skin during those sweltering afternoon hours. The air conditioning works (thank god), though honestly the thick walls keep things pretty comfortable naturally. I spent most evenings up on that roof with a mint tea, watching the light change over the medina – it’s the kind of thing that makes you forget about checking your phone for hours.

The owner clearly knows what travelers actually need. There’s a proper kitchen if you want to cook (though why would you with all the incredible food nearby?), reliable wifi throughout, and – this is key – good water pressure in the showers. The courtyard has that classic fountain situation, but it’s not just for show; the sound of running water actually helps mask the street noise, which can get pretty intense during the day. Check-in was smooth too, none of that “meet us at a café three blocks away” nonsense you sometimes get with smaller places.

Is it perfect? Well, like most medina accommodations, you’ll hear your neighbors sometimes, and the narrow streets mean luggage transport can be interesting if you’ve overpacked. But honestly, at this price point for a private riad this close to everything that matters, those are pretty minor complaints. The 8.5 rating makes sense – it’s the kind of place that does the basics really well without trying to be something it’s not. If you want that authentic medina experience but with actual comfort and space to breathe, this hits the sweet spot.

  1 chauffage d'appoint dans la salle de bain est très appréciable…

  Le riad est très beau, parfait pour un groupe. Tout le nécessaire y est.
  
  What could be improved: Communication nulle, tout est à revoir ! Mais l'hôte vous dira que vous devez vous débrouiller pour avoir du réseau en tout temps ! En résumé, démerdez vous !
  
  Si vous êtes en vacances et que vous vouliez vous déconnecter, oubliez !
  Préparez bien en amont votre arrivée (possible uniquement quand l'hôte se décide à vous écrire avec son vrai numéro donc patientez après un message et soyez réactif car :
  Le numéro de téléphone présent sur le site pour joindre l'hôte n'est pas le bon (bonne chance pour vous organiser car vous envoyer des messages qui ne sont pas reçus. Je suis toujours en attente d'une lecture des miens).
  Le riad n'a pas de nom et sans ça vous ne pouvez pas vous y rendre, d'autant plus que l'adresse indiquée sur le site n'est pas bonne. Il s'agit d'un nom de rue dans laquelle le riad n'est pas !!!
  Aucuns locaux ne peut aider si le riad n'a pas de nom…
  Donc si vous êtes sur place sans internet bonne chance ! De plus vous ne pouvez pas contacter l'hôte puisque vous ne savez pas de qui il s'agit (la personne n'a pas de prénom non plus), le numéro de téléphone communiqué est français et visiblement faux ou plus utilisé.
  Nous avons errer dans la médina pendant 3h, en cherchant avec des locaux, nous avons penser à une arnaque et avons cherché un autre riad pour la nuit…un samedi. Impossible de joindre Booking sur le numéro international. Une journée gâchée.
