Palais Tinmel Marrakech Overview

Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of riads in Marrakech over the years, and Palais Tinmel honestly surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked away in the Zaouia Abbassia quarter – which, if you know the medina at all, is this wonderfully authentic pocket that most tourists never stumble into. You’ll walk down Derb Khettara thinking you’re completely lost (you probably are, but that’s half the fun), and then suddenly there’s this gorgeous entrance that feels like stepping into someone’s private palace.

The thing about this place is that it actually feels like a palais, not just some riad trying to sound fancy. The owners clearly put serious thought into the restoration – I mean, the tilework alone probably took months. What really got me though was how they’ve managed to keep that traditional Moroccan grandeur without making it feel like a museum. The courtyard has this incredible fountain that’s just the right volume of trickling water – you know how some places have those aggressive fountains that sound like Niagara Falls? Not here. It’s perfectly pitched for those lazy afternoon moments when you’re recovering from navigating the souks.

The rooms themselves are spacious by medina standards, and honestly, the beds are some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered in Morocco. They’ve got this mix of traditional furnishings with modern touches that actually works – no weird clash between carved cedar and random IKEA pieces like you see in some places. The bathrooms are particularly well done, with proper water pressure (a minor miracle in the old city) and beautiful tadelakt work that feels authentic rather than touristy.

What I really appreciate is the location – you’re close enough to Jemaa el-Fnaa to walk there in about ten minutes, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the constant drum circles and motorbike noise at night. The neighborhood has this lived-in quality where you’ll see kids playing in the alleys and women chatting on doorsteps. It’s real Marrakech life, not the sanitized version. Plus, there’s this little bakery about two streets over that does incredible msemen in the mornings – the staff will point you in the right direction.

The service hits that sweet spot of being helpful without hovering. They’ll arrange taxis, give you proper directions (not just “go straight and turn left at the carpet shop”), and they actually know the city well enough to suggest places that aren’t total tourist traps. During Ramadan, they were particularly thoughtful about meal timing and explaining local customs, which I appreciated.

Is it perfect? Well, like most medina properties, you’ll hear the call to prayer five times a day – but honestly, that becomes part of the charm pretty quickly. The wifi can be spotty in some rooms, though the common areas are fine. And if you’re the type who needs a gym or pool, you’ll want to look elsewhere.

But here’s the thing – with an 8.8 rating, this place has figured out what makes a great Marrakech experience. It’s that rare combination of authentic atmosphere, genuine comfort, and staff who actually care about your stay. For the price point, you’re getting serious value in a city where tourist hotels can feel either overpriced or underwhelming.

  • Exceptional – Meryem from United Arab Emirates – 10 June 2025 (10/10)

A very nice old style experience

  • Exceptional – Chantal from United Kingdom – 31 May 2025 (10/10)

Gorgeous riad slightly on the outskirts of the medina, away from the very touristy spots and people trying to catch attention to sell stuff. Yet still very easy to walk to restaurants and the centre of the medina. We came back to Marrakech a week later and wished we stayed at Palais Tinmel again. Comfortable and clean.

What could be improved: Breakfast is decent, could be better for the price.

  • Exceptional – Snyder from United States – 31 May 2025 (10/10)

The staff was professional and greeted us at our car and offered us tea and cookies while they asked us what we wanted to plan and gave us tips on having a wonderful stay.

What could be improved: What I didn't like had nothing to do with the hotel or staff. It was more to do with the Riad . The whole experience was surreal . I really loved my stay here

  • Comfortable and peaceful, attentive staff. – Carol from Spain – 22 May 2025 (8/10)

  • Superb – Ausra from Norway – 19 May 2025 (9/10)

  • Beautiful Riad with fab staff – Kirsten from United Kingdom – 14 May 2025 (10/10)

The Riad is beautiful, peaceful with lovely roof terrace areas with a great plunge pool

  • I would definitely come back to this haven. – Hassay from United Kingdom – 26 April 2025 (10/10)

The riad is truly beautiful with traditional tiled floors, Berber rugs, carved shutters and beautiful Moroccan stained glass lampshades. The rooms are large and comfortable. We had a family room which was perfect for travelling with two children. There is a small swimming pool which the kids enjoyed and places to relax and sunbathe. As soon as you step into the riad you leave the hustle and bustle of the Medina and souks behind. It's a haven of peace and tranquillity with birds singing in the courtyard.

What could be improved: It would have been nice to have a hamman/ massage at the riad. There was an offer of this but at another nearby riad.
