Riad Ajebel Overview

You know what really struck me about Riad Ajebel? It’s tucked away on this narrow derb in the Kasbah district where most tourists never venture – I mean, you’re literally walking distance from the Saadian Tombs, but it feels like you’ve discovered some hidden corner of old Marrakech. The first time I wound through those maze-like streets looking for number 91 on Derb Chtouka, I honestly thought I was lost. But that’s actually part of the charm – once you find it (and the staff will meet you at nearby landmarks if you’re struggling), you realize you’ve landed somewhere authentically Moroccan.

The riad itself is this beautifully restored traditional house built around a central courtyard, and I have to say, the restoration work is impressive without being too precious about it. The rooms have that perfect balance of traditional Moroccan elements – think carved cedar, zellij tilework, and those gorgeous tadelakt walls – mixed with modern comforts that actually work. The air conditioning is solid (crucial during those scorching July afternoons), and the beds are genuinely comfortable, not just pretty to look at. What I loved most was how quiet it gets at night. Sure, you’ll hear the call to prayer from nearby mosques, but compared to the chaos of Jemaa el-Fnaa just a fifteen-minute walk away, this feels like a peaceful retreat. The staff – and this is where smaller riads really shine – remembers your name and actually cares about making your stay work. They’ll arrange everything from airport transfers to day trips to the Atlas Mountains, but without that pushy concierge vibe you get at bigger hotels.

Honestly, the location is what makes this place special. You’re in the Kasbah, which means you’re exploring the oldest part of Marrakech, but you’re not dealing with the tourist circus of the main medina. Walk five minutes and you’re at the Kasbah Mosque, ten minutes gets you to those incredible Saadian Tombs, and if you’re up for a longer stroll, the Bahia Palace is totally doable on foot. The breakfast situation is pretty great too – they serve it in the courtyard or on the rooftop terrace, and it’s this nice mix of Moroccan and continental options. Fresh orange juice (obviously), but also really good coffee and pastries. The 8.9 rating makes sense when you consider this isn’t trying to be a luxury resort – it’s a thoughtfully run traditional riad that gets the basics right and adds just enough special touches to make you feel like you’re experiencing the real Marrakech, not some sanitized version of it.

Reviews of Riad Ajebel

  • Excellent service in a surpringly good location – Barbara from Italy – 5 May 2025 (10/10)

The staff at Riad Ajebel is exceptional. Imen and Ahmed went out of their way to make us comfortable. We ate dinner there the first night and it was one of the best meals we had in Marrakech. Breakfast was typically Moroccan but slightly different each morning. The Kasbah neighborhood was terrific, although about a 15 minute walk from the center souks, it was less chaotic and the nearby restaurants were less crowded and a good value. It was also easy to get a taxi to the airport or distant neighborhoods. The rooftop patio offers a lovely spot to read.

What could be improved: I could hear the traffic late into the night and airplanes departing early in the morning, but I imagine noise is a problem no matter where you stay in Marrakech.

  • Very nice and comfortable – Renata from Italy – 3 May 2025 (9/10)

Very conveniently located. Easily walkable and not in the crowded part. Good eateries in the area

What could be improved: There is nothing we didn’t like except maybe the packed breakfast for a very early departure that was not at all worth it’s price but it is a minor detail.

  • Great stay! – Molly from United Kingdom – 27 April 2025 (9/10)

Property is gorgeous, room was very clean and bathroom really nice! The breakfast was great every morning and always a little different. Room was cleaned everyday and the staff were so lovely and helpful!

What could be improved: It’s right next to a main road, so is a little noisy and it is also at the bottom of the Medina, so at least a 20 minute walk to the centre, but these things didn’t bother us. Unfortunately, the shower pressure was not good but that was our only issue!

  • wonderful – Mariana from United States – 21 April 2025 (10/10)

Breakfast was amazing, the staff was amazing and the location super great

  • A great choice – Olu from United Kingdom – 8 April 2025 (9/10)

Good location, bit of a walk to the central square and souks but very much walkable. Breakfast was decent and varied. And the both staff were super friendly and professional.

    Highly recommended!

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Exceptional – Aneta from Netherlands – 21 March 2025 (10/10)

Absolutely lovely place. Our family spent there one full week and we really enjoyed it. The Riad is comfortable, quiet, with good equipment, good space, proper bathroom and overall very clean. The couple which runs it is extremely kind and supportive, provided us with any advises or/and queries we had….Good daily breakfasts with nice local food and tasty Maroccan tea 🙂
The location is also good: safe place and only 20min away from the main square, which is a nice walk via small streets with a local vibe.
Overall – very good experience and fully recommend the place!

  • Superb – Walenka from Belgium – 21 March 2025 (9/10)

Good breakfast, very kind staff, good service and help when asked. Nice and proper place. lovely terrace as well

  • Exceptional – Kadi from Estonia – 10 March 2025 (10/10)

Very clean and stylish accommodation with nice roof terrace, friendly host, breakfast with a large selection

What could be improved: Located on a busy road and the sounds of cars can be heard very well in the room even at night

  • A perfect traditional Riad in Marrakech – Christina from Ireland – 1 March 2025 (10/10)

The hospitality was exceptional! The owner and staff were incredibly kind and attentive, ensuring a warm and welcoming stay. The property was spotless, beautifully maintained, and offered a peaceful atmosphere. Its location—just a 15-minute walk from the city center—makes it perfect for those who want easy access to the action while enjoying a quiet retreat away from the hustle and bustle. Highly recommended!

What could be improved: Nothing. Everything was perfect.

  • I can't wait until my next stay at Riad Ajebel ! – Celine from United Kingdom – 25 February 2025 (9/10)

Breakfast was delicious and included a range of Moroccan delicacies, local honey, jams. The room and bathroom were nicely decorated and the antique furniture and carpets gave the room a special feel. I particularly enjoyed staying in the Kasbah because it felt very safe and it was very convenient to get into the medina or out on the main roads. On arrival Anke spent some time to explain how to get to key places and gave us lots of tips on how to avoid the most expensive touristy shops. Aziz was so helpful to organise transportation too ! The warm welcome from all staff made this trip very memorable. I will definetely return to this cosy riad !

What could be improved: My friend found the bed a bit hard.
