Riad Chayma Marrakech Overview

You know what really struck me about Riad Chayma when I first walked through those heavy wooden doors? The silence. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the chaos of Bab Doukkala – one of the busier gates into the medina – but inside it’s like someone hit the mute button on Marrakech. The traditional courtyard design actually works, creating this incredible pocket of calm that honestly saved my sanity after long days wandering the souks.

The location is pretty brilliant if you know the medina at all. Derb Taabout is tucked just far enough from the main tourist drag that you’re not dodging selfie sticks every time you head out, but close enough that you can walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa in about fifteen minutes (though I always got wonderfully lost and it took me twenty-five). The neighborhood feels authentically Marrakchi – there’s this little bakery around the corner where locals queue up for fresh bread in the mornings, and the evening call to prayer echoes beautifully between the narrow walls. What I really appreciated was how the staff knew their way around the medina’s maze-like streets. They’d sketch out little maps on napkins and actually give you landmarks that make sense, not just “turn left at the carpet shop” – because, let’s be honest, there are about three hundred carpet shops.

The riad itself has that perfect balance of traditional architecture and modern comfort that so many places try for but rarely nail. The rooms are built around that central courtyard (complete with orange trees that smell incredible), and while they’re not massive, they’re thoughtfully designed with gorgeous tadelakt walls and these little nooks perfect for reading. The rooftop terrace – and this is important – has actual comfortable seating, not just those hard banquettes some riads throw up there. I spent hours up there in the evenings with mint tea, watching the storks nest on nearby rooftops and listening to the medina wind down for the night. The staff runs the place with this quiet efficiency that feels more like staying with knowledgeable friends than a hotel. They’ll arrange day trips without the hard sell, recommend restaurants that aren’t tourist traps (that little place near Mouassine Mosque they sent me to was incredible), and somehow always appeared with fresh towels exactly when you needed them. Honestly, after staying in a few riads around Morocco, I can tell you that 9.1 rating isn’t just numbers – it reflects the kind of place where every detail has been considered by people who actually understand what travelers need.

Reviews of Riad Chayma Marrakech

  • Thank you for a fabulous stay – Fiona from United Kingdom – 13 May 2025 (10/10)

Staff were friendly and very helpful. We received a warm welcome and lots of information from Mohamad on arrival. Our room was clean and comfortable and a fresh bottle of water left everyday, the breakfast was great too. The riad is kept lovely and clean, Mirriam works hard to do this and always has a smile on her face. The roof top terrace is a great place to relax after a day in the city! Special thanks to Hamid for going out of his way to be helpful and kind. Nothing was too much trouble for him, and we enjoyed our conversations and learning more about the local culture.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Beautiful riad near the center. – Amy from United States – 12 May 2025 (9/10)

The room had a separate sitting room which we loved. Also, the bathroom was beautiful and the tub was wonderful. Overall, it was a great experience and close to the heart of town.

  • Great small Riad, nice breakfast on roof terrace. – Darren from United Kingdom – 14 April 2025 (10/10)

Friendly staff. Clean. Comfortable bed. Very good breakfast. Great value for money, located just inside the Medina wall at Bab Doukkala.

What could be improved: The location had a constant stream of mopeds whizzing past, no pavements for pedestrians, you constantly had to stop and move out of the way. Local vicinity was dirty and a little smelly.

  • Good stay – Ihavebeenhere from United Kingdom – 18 November 2024 (10/10)

Its a more modern style Riad, still with some traditional design but with more modern features. Staff are nice, breakfast was lovely in the terrace, room was big with comfortable beds (bed is a bit too low), centrally located, good service. Really enjoyed our stay there.

  • Exceptional – Milichovszki from Hungary – 10 November 2024 (10/10)

Beautiful place with a nice terrace! Great breakfast! Super helpful and kind staff. Very clean.

  • It was fabulous so friendly and so thoughtful – Michelle from Ireland – 4 November 2024 (10/10)

It was a haven of calm n peace in the beautiful chaos

What could be improved: The bed was a little hard to get in and out of but the decor was beautiful

  • Homely and enjoyable – Quinn from Ireland – 3 November 2024 (10/10)

Staff were so so helpful couldn’t have done enough for us!

  • This was my first time to Marrakech and staying in a riyad was definitely a great experience. – Sandra from United States – 31 October 2024 (10/10)

The breakfast was plentiful and they made accommodations regarding the time if you needed. The location is near a gate and therefore not too far to carry your luggage through cobblestone and crowded streets. There are men near the entrance to the Medina with pushcarts to assist with your luggage. You will appreciate their assistance when you have to dodge pedestrians and motor bikes flying down the narrow streets. The location was great, short 10-15 minutes walk to the souks and Jemma El-Fnaa Square. Definitely a cultural experience!

What could be improved: More lighting in the room but they did offer additional lighting if requested.

  • Superb – Ioana from Romania – 27 June 2024 (9/10)

Nice riad, clean rooms. The personnel is very kind, they offered us a lot of information. Breakfast is good, I suppose typical marrocan breakfasts. The riad is situated in the medina

  • Beautiful space and fabulous staff! – Sarah from United Kingdom – 16 June 2024 (8/10)

The property was great- beds were very comfy and the staff were fantastic- nothing was too much trouble!

What could be improved: The aircon was ok but could have been stronger- took a long time for the room to cool down.
The doors are heavy and the Riad echoey so when people come in very late at night, this can be quite loud!
