You know what hit me first when I walked into Riad Dar Talah? The silence. I mean, you’re literally in the thick of the Medina – Bab Doukkala is one of those neighborhoods where the souks never really sleep – but step through their heavy wooden doors and it’s like someone hit the mute button on Marrakech. The central courtyard has this fountain that does exactly what fountains in riads are supposed to do, which is make you forget you’re sharing walls with about a thousand other people in the old city.

The location is honestly perfect if you actually want to experience Marrakech rather than just Instagram it. Derb Jdid isn’t one of those tourist-trap streets – it’s where you’ll see local kids playing football and women heading to the neighborhood hammam. You’re maybe a ten-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa (though honestly, who’s counting when you’re wandering through those maze-like alleys), and the Majorelle Gardens are close enough that you can pop over there early morning before the tour buses arrive. What I really appreciated was being near the Bab Doukkala gate – it’s way less chaotic than some of the other entrances to the Medina, so coming back after dinner doesn’t feel like navigating a carnival.

The rooms themselves have that authentic riad feel without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. The beds are actually comfortable – I know that sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many “charming” places in the Medina seem to think atmosphere trumps a good night’s sleep. The bathrooms are modern enough that you won’t be wrestling with temperamental plumbing, and there’s proper hot water, which honestly became my daily luxury after long days wandering the souks. The staff really knows their stuff too – not just the usual restaurant recommendations, but things like which taxi drivers won’t try to rip you off and when the Ben Youssef Madrasa is least crowded. They helped me arrange a day trip to the Atlas Mountains that ended up being the highlight of my whole trip.

What really sets this place apart is how it feels like a proper escape without being disconnected. The rooftop terrace gives you those postcard views of the Medina and the Atlas Mountains beyond, but it’s not overrun with other guests trying to get the same shot. I spent most evenings up there with mint tea, watching the call to prayer echo across the city as the sun set. The 9.2 rating makes complete sense – this is the kind of place where small details actually matter, from the traditional tilework that’s clearly been maintained with care to the way they serve breakfast in the courtyard each morning. It’s not trying to be the fanciest riad in Marrakech, but it nails everything that makes staying in the Medina special.

  The Riad is beautiful, such a calm space in the middle of the Medina. Close enough to everything but far enough away so it’s still quiet at night time.
  The room was so beautiful and clean with loads of space for chilling out. Unfortunately we couldn’t use the rooftop because my partner is allergic to cats and that seemed to be their main space.
  The staff were all really sweet and looked after us while we were there, cooked amazing breakfast and dinner and were available to answer questions whenever we needed. 100% recommend this place!
  
  What could be improved: Only negative was that we couldn’t use the rooftop because of the cat hair, but it wasn’t too much of a problem.

  We had a fantastic stay at the Riad! We were welcomed with tea, and the room exceeded all our expectations. Breakfast was served to us every morning, and there was always something new to try. Fatima and Raihana are absolutely lovely, and we always felt very comfortable and well taken care of. The rooftop terrace gave us plenty of space to enjoy the beautiful weather and find some peace and quiet. Thank you so much for everything! We’ll definitely be coming back!

  We got a wonderful welcome on arrival and were made to feel very at home here. The area felt super safe and we felt very comfortable here. The room was a great size and was set up beautifully. The breakfast was also wonderful, with table service!

  Fantastic relaxing atmosphere with beautiful decor and incredibly friendly staff, we were able to arrange airport transfers and day tours at a good price via the host. The breakfast was very good, and filling. There is a lovely roof terrace with space to relax and plenty of sun.
  
  What could be improved: Slight walk from main medina, which takes getting used to at night. Unfortunately, we could not make use of the bath.
