Riad Granvilier Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – finding Riad Granvilier tucked away on Derb Jamaa can feel like a treasure hunt at first. You’re winding through these narrow alleyways in the heart of the medina, dodging motorbikes and wondering if your GPS has completely lost its mind, when suddenly you spot this unassuming wooden door. That’s it. That’s your hotel. And honestly? The fact that it’s so hidden is actually part of its charm.

Once you step inside, it’s like entering a different world entirely. The whole place revolves around this gorgeous central courtyard – you know, the classic riad setup – but they’ve done something special with the lighting and the tilework that makes it feel both authentic and surprisingly luxurious. The rooms are scattered around different levels, and while some are definitely better than others (try to snag one of the upper-floor ones if you can), they all have that traditional Moroccan feel without being too museum-like. The bathrooms are actually modern, which – let’s be real – matters when you’re dealing with medina plumbing. I mean, the whole place has this lived-in elegance that a lot of the flashier riads try to recreate but never quite nail.

What really sets this place apart is how the staff genuinely seems to know the neighborhood. They’ll point you toward the little bakery that locals actually use (not the tourist trap everyone else recommends), and they can tell you which nights the square gets too crazy and which routes to take when you’re carrying shopping bags. The breakfast spread is solid – nothing fancy, but good bread, decent coffee, and they’ll make you fresh orange juice that tastes like actual oranges. The rooftop terrace is where you’ll probably end up spending your evenings, especially during cooler months. You can see the Koutoubia mosque from up there, and honestly, watching the city wake up from that vantage point never gets old. Fair warning though – the call to prayer echoes pretty dramatically through the medina, so if you’re a light sleeper, pack earplugs. It’s beautiful, but it’s also 5 AM beautiful, if you know what I mean. The whole experience feels like staying in someone’s well-appointed family home rather than a hotel, which is exactly what you want from a riad experience. It’s got that 8.5 rating for good reason – not perfect, but the imperfections are the kind that add character rather than frustration.

Reviews of Riad Granvilier

  • Superb – Stanislava from Portugal – 13 April 2025 (9/10)

Very convenient location at the market but away enough to be quiet. Nice and clean room. Nice breakfast and very friendly personnel. Would go back again.

  • well situated riad with a wonderful staff – Tabassum from United States – 23 March 2025 (7/10)

It was easy to find and was at a good location

    What could be improved: n/a

  • Gorgeous place, delicious breakfast – Erica from Canada – 15 March 2025 (9/10)

Gorgeous moroccan riad, spacious rooms, with the best breakfast we had on our trip. And of course the staff are very friendly and helpful alike all the places we stayed this trip.

What could be improved: It was down a back alley-like street which felt sketchy at night time. The shower facet had to be held up when you shower.

  • Traditional, very comfortable with lovely staff when you have found it. – Penny from United Kingdom – 7 January 2025 (8/10)

    Traditional.
    Friendly helpful staff

What could be improved: Would not like to have to find it after sunset,
You need a bit of confidence around the souks for the location.

  • Perfect – Lucy from United Kingdom – 10 November 2024 (9/10)

Beautiful property with a gorgeous citrus tree growing within the lobby. The room was small but clean and comfortable, the bathroom was lovely. There was a very nice roof terrace with sofas. We ate dinner here on our first night and it was exceptional (I ordered vegetarian but I imagine the meat is even better), as were the breakfasts we were served every morning.

What could be improved: Nothing – the location is central and hard to find without a map. The best thing I did was downloading an offline map of Marrakech before arriving.

  • Superb – Julie from United Kingdom – 3 October 2024 (9/10)

The staff were really friendly and helpful

What could be improved: It was a little difficult to find initially, couple of mins down an alley. Once you knew where it was fine and close to main square.

  • Exceptional – Mona from United States – 24 March 2023 (10/10)

Great location, close to jamaa Al fana and easy to get back to when you’ve been out and about in the Medina. Amazingly hospitable staff, the gentlemen at the front desk and the ladies taking care of us and preparing our plentiful breakfast spread were so warm and welcoming! A relaxing oasis from the hustle and bustle nearby. Also for families- our room was set up perfectly for a family with two kids, not always the case with the Riad’s. Lovely architecture, clean, and also comfy beds. Everything was great and the staff was exceptional, thank you!

  • Exceptional – Bebee from Spain – 12 December 2022 (10/10)

Everyone here is very nice and kind. The mint tea is perfect!

  • ++++++ – Didier from France – 6 December 2022 (9/10)

Calm, bed comfort, welcoming, beautiful suite, cleanliness, luxurious bath towels and bathrobe, diners, breakfasts etc..
A special thanks to Mustapha and Hamid.
A special thanks too to the chefs Khawla and Bouchra.

What could be improved: Diners : nice, a lot of delicious vegetables.
    But could be more varied.

  • Great stay in the heart of Marrakech – Juraj from Czech Republic – 9 November 2022 (10/10)

Absolutely perfect stay at the heart of Marrakechs' medina. Mustapha and all staff were really nice and helpfull. We've got nice and cozy double room with spacious bathroom. The room kept nice low temperature even in the day heat. Breakfast in the inner part of riad were great, we've been given food by our dietery needs. Really appreciated. We would recommend this accomodation, great value for the price.

What could be improved: Everything was perfect.
