Riad Konouz Overview

You know what struck me first about Riad Konouz? The moment you step through that heavy wooden door on Derb Zemmouri, all the chaos of the medina just… disappears. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the bustling Bab Doukkala area – where locals actually shop, not just the tourist traps – but inside this riad, it’s like finding a secret courtyard that time forgot.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in Marrakech rather than just visiting it. Rue Elgza isn’t one of those streets where every other door is a carpet shop trying to lure you in. Instead, you’ll walk past actual neighborhood spots – there’s this tiny bakery about fifty meters away where the bread smell hits you at 6 AM, and the local hammam is close enough that you can easily pop over (though the riad’s own spa setup is pretty fantastic too). Getting there from Jemaa el-Fnaa takes maybe ten minutes on foot, but here’s the thing – you’ll want to screenshot the exact route because these derb alleyways can be tricky. The staff actually meets first-time guests at Bab Doukkala gate, which is incredibly helpful since even GPS gets confused in the medina.

What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel authentic without sacrificing comfort. The traditional zellij tilework and carved cedar ceilings are the real deal – not some designer’s interpretation of Moroccan style. But then you’ve got proper hot water pressure (miracle!), reliable wifi, and air conditioning that actually works during those brutal July afternoons. The central courtyard follows classic riad design with that gorgeous fountain, and honestly, I spent most mornings just sitting there with mint tea, listening to the call to prayer echo off the surrounding walls. The rooftop terrace gives you those postcard views of the Atlas Mountains, especially at sunset, though it can get pretty crowded up there when the riad’s full.

Service-wise, they really know their stuff. The night manager, Hassan, seems to know every driver, every restaurant owner, every guide worth trusting in the city. Need a taxi at 5 AM for an early flight? He’s got three guys on speed dial. Want to find that specific spice blend you tasted somewhere? He’ll draw you a map to the right stall in the souks. It’s that kind of local knowledge that you just can’t Google.

The rooms vary quite a bit – some are more spacious than others, and a few can feel a bit dark during the day since traditional riads don’t have tons of windows facing outward. But the beds are comfortable, and there’s something magical about falling asleep to the distant sounds of the medina settling down for the night. Just be prepared for the early morning call to prayer if you’re a light sleeper – though after a day of exploring Marrakech’s endless alleyways, you’ll probably sleep through anything.

Reviews of Riad Konouz

  • Traditional Riad very well located – Deirdre from Spain – 30 June 2025 (9/10)

The beautiful traditional decor and relaxing atmosphere. Very good AC which made it easy to sleep in 32° night time temperature.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • We had a great stay, would recommend. – Livia from Belgium – 29 June 2025 (9/10)

The place is extremely charming and well run. We had a great stay. The room was nice and we enjoyed the roof terrace as well. Breakfast was yummy. The hosts were super lovely and even mailed our (already stamped) postcards for us.

What could be improved: The bathroom was a bit cumbersome – the door swung outward and the light switch was hidden behind the swinging door. The step stool into the elevated bathroom was quite wobbly. The shower and sink workedfine, but the tile paint and stick-on tile were applied very haphazardly and quite funny.

  • Best cheap hotel – so good – Esra from Denmark – 15 June 2025 (10/10)

    Everything
    The room
    The food
    The personal and service
    Very clean and lux hotel

  • Another wonderful stay in this lovely Riad. – Nancy from United Kingdom – 4 June 2025 (10/10)

This was my second stay in 2 years and it was just as good this time as the last. The staff are lovely – very kind and helpful. A big thank you to Doha and Ayoub for taking such good care of me and the other guests. The location is good- close to the medina but in a very quiet area with lots of amenities nearby. It is quiet at night. The rooms are of a very high standard- tastefully decorated with good showers, sitting areas and air con. The roof terrace is lovely as is the downstairs area. Breakfast is plentiful and varied and tbey are happy to accommodate any requests for different foods/ choices if they can. They do evening meals but I did not eat on this time. If I ever return to Marrakech I will definitely stay here.

  • Superb – Charlotte from United Kingdom – 31 May 2025 (9/10)

Lovely riad, lovely people, beautiful bathroom and we had a massive family suite, walking distance to main square. Huge yummy breakfast. Helped us with a bus to Essaouira.

  • Perfectly located, beatutifully decorated Riad with really kind and helpful people. – Gyula from Hungary – 30 May 2025 (10/10)

Riad Konouz is harmoniously decorated in Moroccan style, we loved it. Perfectly located, within walking distance from many important places (the souks, Djeema el-Fnaa, Koutoubia Mosque, pick-up points of guided tours). Altough close to the busy street yet really quiet and relaxed. The rooftop "lounge" is like an oasis. Really helpful staff, no matter if it is about a transfer to the airport, preparing a delicious local tagine for dinner or suggesting places to visit or shops to buy local things. Mohamed was really easy to communicate with when preparing for the trip, then Ayoub was a really kind host during our stay. Thanks a lot Riad Konouz!

What could be improved: I cannot tell anything, all was ok!

  • Superb – Andrew from United Kingdom – 26 May 2025 (9/10)

Really helpful staff. I was able to arrange my taxi t the airport through them. I was also accommodated when I realized last minute that I had made an error in my booking and they were able to accommodate me despite my error.

What could be improved: The air conditioner although worked well and kept me cool at night was draining onto the floor for a while in my room.

  • Wonderful staff and beautiful surroundings – Rachel from United Kingdom – 22 May 2025 (10/10)

The riad was beautiful, the rooms were very comfortable, and the staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful, I couldn't recommend them enough!

    What could be improved: N/A

  • Peaceful getaway from the city chaos – Achen from Turkey – 22 May 2025 (9/10)

Family-owned business, exquisitely decorated, quiet, clean, peaceful terrace, helpful and friendly staff

  • Exceptional – Nahar from Netherlands – 14 May 2025 (10/10)

Doha was very welcoming and friendly. She made sure we felt comfortable and also suggested us places to visit during our stay.
Property was pretty clean and it felt like home.
We had to leave early hours for our flight and they made sure to pack us breakfast. Everything went smooth.
