Riad LakLak Tradition 350m2 in der Medina mit Terrasse Overview

You know what caught me off guard about Riad LakLak? The name doesn’t really prepare you for how substantial this place actually is. When I first walked through that heavy wooden door on Place des Ferblantiers – and honestly, you might walk past it twice before spotting the entrance – I was expecting another cramped riad conversion. But this thing sprawls across 350 square meters, which in Medina terms is basically a palace.

The location is pretty clever, actually. Most people think Mellah and automatically assume it’s going to be touristy chaos, but this corner of the old Jewish quarter has this weird pocket of calm. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the main souks (I timed it), but the alleyways here don’t get that constant stream of tour groups. Place des Ferblantiers itself is where locals still come to buy actual metalwork – not the tourist stuff, but proper handcrafted pieces for their homes. I spent way too much time watching the craftsmen work from the street-level windows.

The riad itself feels authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find. The courtyard has that perfect morning light thing going on – you know, when the sun hits the zellij tiles just right and everything glows. The rooms are generous (again, rare in the Medina), and whoever restored this place clearly understood traditional architecture. The tadelakt walls have that smooth, almost soap-like finish that takes years to perfect. But here’s the thing that really sold me: the rooftop terrace. Most riads have these tiny afterthought terraces, but LakLak’s actually gives you space to breathe. You can see the Atlas Mountains on clear days, and the sunset views over the Medina are honestly ridiculous.

Practical stuff – because I know people want to know – the wifi actually works throughout the property, which is sort of miraculous given these thick walls. The traditional sitting areas have been set up with enough power outlets that you can actually use your devices without playing musical chairs with charging cables. Breakfast happens in the courtyard, and they source from the local markets, which means the bread is still warm and the orange juice tastes like actual oranges instead of that concentrate stuff you get at chain hotels.

The staff here gets it – they’re not constantly trying to upsell you on tours or experiences, but they know the neighborhood inside and out. When I asked about finding a particular spice vendor, the manager didn’t just give me directions; he walked me there and introduced me to the owner. That’s the kind of local knowledge that makes a difference.

I mean, it’s not perfect – the hot water can be temperamental in the mornings when everyone’s showering at once, and if you’re sensitive to the call to prayer, you’ll definitely hear it from the nearby mosque. But honestly, if those things bother you, you probably shouldn’t be staying in the Medina anyway. This place captures what makes Marrakech special without making you feel like you’re roughing it, and in a city where every other riad is either falling apart or trying too hard to be boutique-y, that balance is worth celebrating.

  • Exceptional – Orts from Spain – 12 May 2025 (10/10)

  • Genial! – Cristina from Spain – 27 April 2025 (9/10)

    TODO EL HOTEL ES PRECIOSO

  • Great staff, amazing riad! – Ameera from Ireland – 5 February 2025 (8/10)

Property was clean and decor was lovely!

What could be improved: The open bathrooms with no doors were an issue. The location, although very close to everything you need in the city, can be dodgy at nighttime
