Riad Les Bougainvilliers Overview

You know what struck me first about Riad Les Bougainvilliers? The complete silence the moment you step through that heavy wooden door. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the chaos of Rue Riad Zitoun Lakdim – where the donkey carts and motorbikes create this constant symphony of honking and shouting – but inside, it’s like someone hit the mute button on Marrakech. The riad sits tucked away on Derb Ben Amrane, which honestly, you’ll probably walk past three times before you find it (the alleys in this part of the medina all look identical), but that’s exactly what makes it special.

The whole place feels like someone’s elegant grandmother decided to open her home to travelers, and I mean that in the best way possible. The traditional courtyard has this gorgeous fountain that actually works – you’d be surprised how many riads have broken ones – and the bougainvillea climbing the walls is real, not some sad plastic attempt. The rooms wrap around this central space, and while they’re not huge, they’re thoughtfully designed with proper air conditioning that doesn’t sound like a helicopter landing. What really got me was the attention to detail… like, the bathroom tiles are clearly hand-painted, and someone took time to make sure the traditional tadelakt walls feel smooth as silk under your fingers. The beds are actually comfortable too, which honestly can be hit or miss in these converted old houses.

Here’s the thing about staying this deep in the medina – you’re a solid 10-minute walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa square, but you’re also right in the heart of where actual Marrakchis live and work. The local hammam is literally around the corner (way more authentic than the tourist ones), and there’s this tiny bakery about 50 meters away where you can grab fresh msemen in the morning. The staff at Les Bougainvilliers actually knows the neighborhood – they’ll draw you a proper map and tell you which spice vendor won’t try to charge you tourist prices. I appreciated that they didn’t just hand me a glossy brochure and wish me luck. The rooftop terrace deserves a mention too… it’s nothing fancy, but catching sunset with the Atlas Mountains in the distance while sipping mint tea? That’s the Morocco moment you came for. Just don’t expect to find it easily on your first night – bring the business card and maybe download an offline map, because GPS gets confused in these narrow alleys.

  • A wonderful oasis in a great location in a vibrant city – Katie from United Kingdom – 11 May 2025 (10/10)

It was central for the jemaa el fna. . The Riad was beautiful, very spacious and very quiet. A meal is available.
The room we stayed in was so elegant and even had a balcony. The bed was very comfortable and I was glad of the air conditioning.
The terrace was a very tranquil place to have your breakfast or just read a book or lie in the sun.
The staff were very attentive and happy to help with anything. Very informative.

What could be improved: I couldn't get the water to stay at the right temperature (probably user error) but have to add that the water was hot.

The riad itself is beautifully decorated with a peaceful courtyard, cozy rooms, and a rooftop terrace that was perfect for relaxing after exploring the city. The breakfasts were fresh and delicious, and they were happy to adjust portions or options to suit our son’s tastes. He especially loved the fresh orange juice every morning
