Riad Makech Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first turned down that narrow alley in Arset Moula Taoula, I wasn’t sure my taxi driver knew where he was going. The medina can be confusing even for locals, and this little street doesn’t exactly announce itself. But then you spot the understated entrance to Riad Makech, and suddenly it all makes sense. This is one of those places that doesn’t need to shout because it knows exactly what it is.
The moment you step through that heavy wooden door, you’re transported from the controlled chaos of Marrakech’s medina into this incredibly peaceful courtyard. I mean, the contrast is almost jarring – in the best way possible. The traditional Moroccan architecture here is the real deal, not some tourist-friendly interpretation. You’ve got those gorgeous zellige tiles that catch the light differently throughout the day, and the fountain in the center actually serves a purpose beyond looking pretty (though it definitely does that too). It keeps everything cool and creates this gentle background sound that somehow makes you forget you’re literally surrounded by one of Africa’s busiest cities. The rooms themselves feel authentic without being uncomfortable – they’ve managed to preserve that traditional riad character while sneaking in modern amenities that actually work. And honestly, after staying in a few riads where the “historic charm” meant dodgy plumbing, that’s not something I take for granted anymore.
What really sets this place apart, though, is how it sits in the medina. You’re close enough to Jemaa el-Fnaa that you can walk there in about ten minutes, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the constant drum circles and tourist crowds. The souks are right there when you want them, but when you retreat back to the riad, you actually feel like you’re experiencing a different side of Marrakech. The staff here get that balance too – they’re incredibly helpful without being pushy, and they seem to genuinely understand what travelers need. Like, they’ll give you proper directions that account for the fact that GPS is basically useless in the medina, and they know which hammams are worth your time versus which ones are tourist traps. The rooftop terrace becomes magical in the evenings, especially if you time it right for sunset – you can see the Atlas Mountains in the distance while the call to prayer echoes across the city. It’s one of those moments that reminds you why you travel in the first place. Sure, it’s not the flashiest place in Marrakech, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

Reviews of Riad Makech
Selaiman was such an amazing host and we would love to come back and enjoy Marrakech again here. 10/10! – Joshua from United States – 5 July 2025 (10/10)
Right from the beginning we were greeted with Moroccan tea and such an exceptional host and service. Rooms were cleaned everyday and we were served breakfast as well along with helping us find taxis and things to do…even tips!
Exceptional – Vernon from United States – 16 June 2025 (10/10)

Beautiful Riad in a great location! – Bethany from Canada – 31 May 2025 (9/10)
Beautiful Riad in a great location! Very easy access to the Riad so you’re able to get dropped off very close to it. It is also very close to Djemaa El Fna and the many souks. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Suleiman greeted us with mint tea and then let us choose which room we preferred out of a few available! The room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast on the terrace was amazing and one of the best breakfasts offered by the many Riad’s we stayed at. We had to leave very early on our last day and Suleiman prepared us a breakfast to go! We would highly recommend staying here and would definitely stay again!
What could be improved: The lighting fixtures in the rooms are beautiful, however, the downside is the lighting is very dim. It was fine for two days but if I were to stay longer I would need brighter lighting.Superb – Calin from Romania – 30 May 2025 (9/10)
Located in the medina, it is very close to the entrance to the old city and therefore to the main street. It is a plus for those with luggage.
Breakfast, typical Moroccan, was served on the terraceA great way to explore Medina and easy to find – Indera from Germany – 28 May 2025 (9/10)
Just a minute walk to the Medina and attractions. Also near the mainroad, if you have a car, you can park on the other side of the road for 100dirham in one night.
Have really good breakfast, have basic amenities.
The best is you choose on the terrace for a room, because is good ventilated.
Have AC and Smart TV, the shower also good between cold and hot.
Really humble service

Lovely stay! The location is fantastic, just a short walk from the main square. Ismail looked after us so well and was there to answer any questions we had. He prepared us breakfast early when we went to the desert which was great! Would definitely recommend this riad.
