Riad Mazaj Overview
You know what struck me first about Riad Mazaj? It’s actually tucked away on this tiny street called Derb Jamaa, and I mean really tucked away – you’ll probably walk past it twice before you spot the entrance. But that’s sort of the charm of staying in the Riad Zitoun Lakdim area of the medina. You’re deep enough in the maze that you feel like you’ve discovered something authentic, but honestly, you can still find your way to Jemaa el-Fnaa without needing a GPS and a prayer.
The whole place has that classic riad thing going on – you walk through this unassuming door and suddenly you’re in this gorgeous courtyard with traditional tiles everywhere and the sound of water trickling from a fountain. I mean, it’s what you picture when you think “Moroccan riad,” but they’ve actually managed to pull it off without feeling like a theme park version. The rooms are scattered around different levels (fair warning: there’s some stair climbing involved), and each one feels different. Mine had this amazing carved ceiling and windows that opened onto the courtyard below. The beds are comfortable – not luxury hotel level, but definitely better than I expected for the price point. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. Yeah, you’ll hear the call to prayer and maybe some street sounds during the day, but once evening hits, it’s surprisingly peaceful for being right in the medina.
The staff here actually knows their stuff – they’re not just reciting rehearsed recommendations. When I asked about getting to the tanneries, the guy at reception told me the best time to go (early morning, before the heat and crowds) and which route to take that avoids the worst of the souk chaos. That’s the kind of local knowledge that makes a difference. Breakfast is served in that central courtyard, and it’s proper Moroccan – fresh bread, local honey, mint tea that doesn’t quit. Nothing fancy, but it sets you up right for a day of exploring. The only thing I’d mention is that if you’re traveling with heavy luggage, coordinate with them about getting it to your room beforehand. The entrance is narrow and the stairs can be a bit tricky if you’re hauling a massive suitcase. But honestly, with a 9.2 rating, they’re clearly doing something right. It’s one of those places where you feel like you’re staying somewhere that matters to the city, not just passing through it.

Exceptional – Sheikh from Switzerland – 21 May 2025 (10/10)
Sehr gut
What could be improved: Every think is perketHelpful staff, great location, great experience – Talib from United Kingdom – 11 May 2025 (9/10)
Rashid and Abdul and the staff were all extremely helpful during our stay. The location is excellent, very central for all the medina sights. The roof terrace is very nice and peaceful during the day and you can sit out there to listen to the live jazz from the restaurant next door in the evening. The breakfast was good and very filling. Overall we were very happy with our stay.
What could be improved: The bathroom in the single bedroom is quite small so the shower can spray on the floor if you don't put a spare towel down, but this didn't seem to be a problem in other rooms. But no complaints for the price of that room!Wonderful staff, clean place but if you have mobility issues then book only a ground floor room. – M from United Kingdom – 10 May 2025 (8/10)
Cleanliness, fantastic breakfast and very helpful and friendly staff. A very central location
What could be improved: Lack of lifts for the superior room located on 2nd floorExceptional – Paul from United Kingdom – 5 May 2025 (10/10)
Rashid was a great host, he went out of his way with his team to help in every way.
What could be improved: You just need to be aware that the roof top bar next door is noisy, until around 11-00, it didn’t bother us, as we went straight to sleep after a busy day, but it could be disturbing.Perfect location, big rooms, great breakfast, lovely staff – Jasmine from United States – 5 May 2025 (8/10)
I loved everything about this riad! The room was big, the bathroom had two sinks, the bed was comfortable. The breakfast was great. When I first arrived I was offered tea and cookies, which was such a lovely greeting and allowed me to relax before going to my room. The staff was helpful with any questions I had about the area, excursions, etc. I was able to do laundry here as well, which was so helpful. the LOCATION IS KEY. This was right in the mix of shops and food spots and was right next door to La Pergola where you can get dinner and drinks (not too many places serve alcohol, so having such a nice spot right next door was great.) There is also live music there.
What could be improved: Truly, everything was great, no complaints at all. I would caution that if you're someone who needs silence to sleep, then keep in mind that there is live music next door, which goes on until 11pm. I loved listening to the live music from my room, but if that would bother you then take note of this.Exceptional – Kartvelishvili from Georgia – 21 April 2025 (10/10)
The staff were very attentive, hospitable and helpful. The interior is traditional Moroccan Riad and is located in the heart of Medina, close to every attractions, restaurants and shopping spots. I will repeat that the staff of the Riad is the best and exceptional part, which turns your stay easier, safer, more enjoyable and exceptional experience.
