Riad Mounlight Overview

You know what hit me first when I stepped into Riad Mounlight? The silence. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the chaos of Bab Taghzoute – one of the busier entrances to the medina – but once you duck through that unassuming door on Derb Ben Rahmoun El Kebir, it’s like someone turned down the volume on Marrakech. The traditional courtyard setup does what it’s supposed to do here, creating this perfect little sanctuary where you can actually hear yourself think. The staff at check-in were genuinely welcoming too, not that rushed politeness you sometimes get at places trying too hard to impress.

What really works about this place is how it strikes that balance between authentic and comfortable – honestly, some riads go so hard on the “authentic experience” that you end up sleeping on what feels like a medieval torture device. Not here. The rooms have character (those gorgeous zellige tiles, the carved plasterwork that probably took months to complete) but the beds are actually decent and the bathrooms work properly. I stayed during shoulder season in March, and the rooftop terrace was perfect for morning coffee – you get glimpses of the Atlas Mountains on clear days, plus you’re high enough to catch the call to prayer echoing across the medina without it being overwhelming. The location is honestly ideal if you want to be in the thick of things without the constant hassle. You’re maybe a seven-minute walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa square, but more importantly, you’re right near some of the medina’s better shopping streets where locals actually shop, not just the tourist traps.

The breakfast spread was better than I expected – proper Moroccan pancakes, fresh orange juice that actually tastes like oranges, and they’ll make you eggs however you want them. One small thing that impressed me: the Wi-Fi actually works throughout the property, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many riads have dead zones everywhere except the lobby. The pool area is compact but refreshing after a day of wandering the souks, and the water’s usually warm enough by afternoon. I will say, if you’re planning to stay during peak season (October through April), book the terrace room if you can swing it – the extra space makes a difference when you want to spread out a bit. The whole place just feels well-maintained and thoughtfully run, like someone actually cares about the guest experience rather than just checking boxes. For the price point and that 8.9 rating, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for from a quality riad experience.

Everything about the property was great

  • Would come again tomorrow. – Augusto from Spain – 19 April 2025 (10/10)

The place was beautiful, clean and well located. A safe haven in the adventure that is the Medina, and close enough to taxi stations, which is key to getting around other areas of Marrakech.

The staff was excellent! Before our arrival they were already looking out for us. I had an incident where I forgot my AirPods and charger in the hotel when I headed to the airport and they personally brought it to me. I have no words to express my gratitude.

What could be improved: Nothing to say here.

  • Simple, friendly staff. good location, great food.almost perfect. – Stefanie from Germany – 17 April 2025 (8/10)

We wanted a simple, easily accessible location in the old medina where we could stay for a couple of nights, with break in the middle of the stay to accommodate our trip to the desert. This Riad ticked all the boxes from a practical point of view.
The staff were extremely kind and helpful, accommodated our early departure by serving us a full breakfast one whole hour early.
The one reason I’m not giving the place a 10 is the smell coming off the bathroom in the larger bedroom on our second night. I know it’s a perennial problem of plumbing in old riads in Morocco, but it’s a relatively easy fix and it put a slight wrinkle on an otherwise perfect stay.
