You know what really strikes you about Riad O LY? It’s tucked away on this narrow little street in Mouassine where you’ll probably get lost at least twice trying to find it the first time – but honestly, that’s half the charm of staying in the medina. The moment you step through those heavy wooden doors, it’s like someone hit the mute button on all the chaos outside. I mean, one second you’re dodging motorbikes and hearing the calls from the souks, and the next you’re standing in this gorgeous courtyard with traditional tiles and the sound of water trickling from a fountain.

The location is actually perfect if you want to feel like you’re really in Marrakech, not just visiting it. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fna (though it feels like a world away), and the Mouassine district has some of the best little restaurants that tourists never find. The riad itself has that authentic Moroccan architecture you see in magazines – you know, the kind with intricate zellige work and carved plaster that makes you wonder how anyone actually builds something like this. The rooms are what you’d expect from a well-run four-star place, nothing fancy but comfortable, with those thick walls that keep things surprisingly cool even when it’s blazing outside. The rooftop terrace is where you’ll probably end up spending your evenings – the views over the medina are incredible, especially at sunset when the Atlas Mountains peek through the haze.

What I really appreciated was how the staff actually knows the neighborhood. They don’t just hand you a tourist map and wish you luck – they’ll tell you which hammam is less touristy, or that the spice vendor on the corner gives fair prices, or that Thursday mornings get crazy busy because of the local market. The breakfast spread is solid traditional Moroccan fare, and they serve it until pretty late which is great if you’re not exactly a morning person. One thing to know – like most riads in the medina, getting your luggage there can be interesting since cars can’t reach the door. But they arrange for someone to meet you at the nearest accessible point, and it’s really not a big deal. The 8.9 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be a luxury resort, but it nails what it is: an authentic, comfortable base for exploring one of the world’s most fascinating cities. If you’re the type who wants to actually experience Marrakech rather than just Instagram it, this place gets it right.

  Upon arrival, I was warmly welcomed with traditional Moroccan tea and biscuits, which set the tone for a truly pleasant stay. The room was spacious, well-appointed, and featured comfortable beds, along with a charming terrace that enhanced the experience. Breakfast was of high quality, and on the day of my excursion, the staff kindly prepared a takeaway breakfast for me. The entire team was exceptionally friendly and respectful, offering valuable tips on the best places to visit in the city. Housekeeping was also excellent, with the room cleaned and tidied daily. The location is ideal—just a 10-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa Square.

  The staff were exceptionally kind and attentive to our needs. For example, packing us a breakfast when we needed to leave early one day, and walking me & my luggage out of the Medina to a pick-up spot for my airport ride, which they arranged. Great location in the Medina. Breakfast included a variety of choices, on the scenic rooftop. Good wifi. Would absolutely staying here again.

  Marrakech can be sensory overload. Riad O Ly was a true respite. I felt cared for. The staff took care of everything, even when changes came up in my itinerary. I had flexibility to sit in the courtyard or rooftop areas when I needed to recharge after exploring the city. And the staff gave me a paper map and told me of a wayfinding app that didn't require wifi.
  
  What could be improved: The room itself had no view, but there were other places in the riad where I could sit and absorb the view.

  Started off with a small room, which was fine apart from no wardrobe ( Riads are not always large buildings)
  but then moved to a larger room. The staff were excellent friendly and the pick up taxi they organised took us right into the souk as near as he could get.

  The staff at Riad O LY were amazing , so hospitable and friendly . Would come back and stay here just for the staff. Bed was the comfiest best I’ve ever slept in and the breakfast was so nice to wake up to , if I’m ever in Marrakesh again I will stay here
