RIAD SHAJARA Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Riad Shajara, tucked away on this tiny derb in the medina, I wasn’t expecting much. The address (Rue Doaur Graoua, Derb Jdid) sounds intimidating if you’re not familiar with Marrakech’s labyrinthine old city, but once you actually find it – and you will need to ask for directions at least twice – it’s this incredible oasis that just hits you. The name literally means “tree” in Arabic, and you get why the moment you step into the central courtyard. There’s this gorgeous olive tree anchoring everything, and the whole place is built around it in that classic riad style where every room faces inward. What struck me most was how quiet it gets once you’re inside those thick walls. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the souks and all that beautiful chaos, but somehow the riad creates this pocket of calm that’s honestly magical after a day of navigating the medina’s sensory overload.
The rooms themselves are beautifully done – not trying too hard to be fancy, just authentically Moroccan with really thoughtful touches. The tiles are stunning (and I’m usually not a tile person), and the beds are actually comfortable, which… well, let’s just say that’s not always a given in traditional riads. The staff here really know their stuff about the neighborhood, which matters more than you’d think. They’ll walk you to the main square your first day if you want, and they have this down-to-earth way of explaining how to navigate back without making you feel like a complete tourist. The rooftop terrace is where you’ll probably spend your evenings – perfect spot for watching the sunset over the medina with a mint tea, and you can actually see the Atlas Mountains on clear days.
What really sets this place apart though is how it feels lived-in rather than museum-like. You know what I mean? Some riads are so pristine they feel sterile, but Shajara has this warmth that makes you want to linger over breakfast in the courtyard. The location is actually perfect for exploring – you’re deep enough in the medina to feel authentic but close enough to Jemaa el-Fnaa that you won’t get completely lost trying to find your way back after dinner. Fair warning though: the derb is narrow (like, really narrow), so if you’re bringing big luggage, pack light or be prepared for a bit of an adventure getting it there. But honestly, that’s part of the charm. This isn’t some cookie-cutter hotel experience – it’s the real deal, and that 9.3 rating makes complete sense once you’ve stayed here.
