Location & Neighbourhood

Staying in the Arset El Houta quarter puts you right in the heart of the old city, which is exactly where you want to be. You’re close enough to the main souks and Djemaa el-Fna square to explore on foot, but tucked far enough away that the noise doesn’t follow you back. I mean, that balance is genuinely hard to find in this part of Marrakech. Couples especially seem to love it here — there’s something about the intimacy of the neighbourhood that just works for a trip for two.

The Riad Itself

Riad Smara carries that classic riad layout — rooms arranged around a central courtyard, with a fountain doing its quiet, trickling thing in the middle. The design feels considered rather than overdone, with traditional Moroccan tilework and carved plasterwork that actually tells you something about the craftsmanship of the region. It’s not a big property, which is sort of the point — the scale keeps things personal. You’re not lost in a corridor of identical doors; you feel like a guest in someone’s home, which is a very different feeling from a standard hotel.

  Staff friendly, and helpful with choosing restaurants and booking trips. Moroccan style decor. 8 minute walk to main square. Comfortable places to relax in shade beside pool, sofa on 1st floor and lantern lit roof terrace. Home made pancakes and pikelets delicious. Good coffee.

  Very nice and comfortable riad just outside the Medina. Breakfast was amazing, the room was very clean and the bathroom was very spacious (with everything you need). Our host was just amazing. Would recommend booking here!

  The riad is a peaceful refuge from the craziness of the Medina! It’s about a 15 minute walk to Jemaa el-Fna. The staff were really lovely, breakfast was good, and the room comfortable.
  
  What could be improved: If I was on my own I think I’d have felt nervous walking back to the riad at night as it’s a little off the beaten track. But then I don’t like doing this at home either!
