Riad Zahir Overview
I’ll be honest – finding Riad Zahir was a bit of an adventure. You know how it is in the medina, with those narrow derb streets that all look identical until you’ve walked them a dozen times. It’s tucked away on Derb Sidi Bou Ameur in the Riad Laarouss area, and while that might sound intimidating if you’re not familiar with Marrakech, it’s actually perfect once you get your bearings. The taxi will drop you at the nearest accessible point, and then it’s about a five-minute walk through the maze – honestly, just follow the riad’s directions they send beforehand, because GPS is basically useless once you’re deep in the medina.
What really struck me about this place (and I mean this in the best way) is how it feels like stepping into someone’s beautifully maintained family home rather than a hotel. The moment you walk through that heavy wooden door – which, by the way, you’ll definitely need help spotting the first time – you’re in this gorgeous central courtyard with that classic Moroccan fountain and intricate tilework that looks like it took forever to complete. The staff actually remembers your name, which sounds small but makes such a difference when you’re trying to navigate a new city. They’re genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions. When I was completely lost trying to find the Saadian Tombs, one of them drew me a little map and marked the easiest route that avoided the busiest souks.
The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a traditional riad – high ceilings, beautiful textiles, and that wonderful coolness that feels like a refuge from Marrakech’s heat. I stayed during shoulder season in April, and while the days were warm, the thick walls kept everything comfortable. The WiFi actually works well (I know, I know, but it matters when you need to check maps or stay in touch), and the bathrooms are properly updated without losing the authentic feel. One thing worth mentioning – and this isn’t really a complaint, more of a heads up – is that sound carries in these old buildings. You’ll hear the call to prayer from nearby mosques, which honestly becomes part of the charm, but you might also hear other guests on the terrace or in the courtyard if you’re a light sleeper.
The rooftop terrace is where you’ll probably spend your evenings, and it’s got one of those views that makes you understand why people fall in love with this city. You can see the Atlas Mountains on clear days, and the medina spreads out below like this incredible living puzzle. They serve breakfast up there too – nothing fancy, but good bread, local honey, fresh orange juice, and strong coffee. Perfect for planning your day or just watching the city wake up. The location really is ideal if you want to be in the thick of things without the chaos of staying right next to Jemaa el-Fnaa. You’re maybe a ten-minute walk from the main square, close enough to pop back for a rest when the afternoon heat gets intense, but far enough that you can actually sleep at night.

Charming and Authentic Stay in the Heart of the City – Hannah from Portugal – 25 June 2025 (9/10)
We had a wonderful stay! The lovely women were so welcoming and helpful — communication before and during our visit was excellent. Our room was cozy, with a beautiful blue bathroom, and we loved having breakfast on our own private terrace. The riad felt authentic and peaceful, yet it was very central.
What could be improved: The only small downside was that the pool and rooftop terrace could use a little care, but overall it didn’t take away from the experience. We’d definitely come back!Exceptional – Karin from Finland – 4 June 2025 (10/10)
Almost everything!
What could be improved: Maybe the rooftop terrace should have gotten some love and care and breakfast could have had some fruit or some healthier options. (But it was still delicious!!!)We loved all about the property. We don’t have any negative to say. Riad is in the Medina. Beautiful Riad. Ladies cleane – Kristina from Norway – 12 May 2025 (10/10)
We loved all about the property. We don’t have any negative to say. Riad is in the Medina. Beautiful Riad. Ladies cleaned the room and everything in the Riad every single day. They was so welcoming and friendly. They asked us every time they saw us if everything is good and asked if we want a tea. They helped us and we felt us very safe. These ladies who work in this Riad are the most amazing people I met.

What could be improved: We liked everything and have no complaints !Beautiful Central Relaxing Riad – Colette from United Kingdom – 8 March 2025 (10/10)
Beautiful Riad centrally located in the Medina, minutes away from Souks and Bacha Coffee. Staff were super friendly and helpful, served up delicious Moroccan breads for breakfast with honey and preserves. Incredibly quiet and relaxing with a comfy bed and a beautiful deep traditional Moroccan bath.
What could be improved: Cash payment is preferably upon arrival but bank transfer details will be provided in advance if requested. Staff organised the transfer from and to
the airport which was brilliant.Exceptional – Giovanni from Italy – 3 March 2025 (10/10)
