Splendide Villa, Marrakech Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Splendide Villa? The name actually fits – and I say that as someone who’s rolled their eyes at plenty of overly grand hotel names in Morocco. This place sits on Rue Ourika, which honestly isn’t one of those streets tourists stumble onto by accident, and that’s kind of the point. You’re close enough to walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa (maybe 15 minutes if you don’t get wonderfully lost in the souks), but far enough away that you won’t hear the drums and snake charmers until 2 AM.
The whole property feels like someone’s wealthy aunt decided to open her riad to guests – there’s this lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake. The courtyard has that perfect morning light thing going on, you know? I mean, I’m not usually the type to wake up early on vacation, but I found myself getting up just to sit there with mint tea before the day got too hot. The staff here actually remembers your name, which sounds like such a small thing until you realize how rare that is. They’ll sort out your hammam appointments without you having to ask twice, and honestly, their restaurant recommendations are better than most guidebooks. They sent me to this tiny place near Bab Doukkala that I never would have found otherwise.
What really sold me on this place was the attention to details that matter when you’re actually staying somewhere, not just Instagramming it. The AC works properly (crucial in summer), the water pressure is solid, and – this might sound weird – but the beds are the right height. I’ve stayed in riads where you practically need a ladder to get into bed. The rooftop terrace gives you those Atlas Mountain views everyone talks about, but it’s also just a nice spot to decompress after a day of navigating Marrakech’s beautiful chaos. The pool isn’t huge, but it’s clean and actually refreshing, not just decorative. During ramadan, they’re super respectful about meal times, and during the busier winter months, they somehow never feel crowded. I think they just don’t pack people in like some places do. The only minor thing – and I’m being picky here – is that the wifi can be spotty in some rooms, but honestly, that might be a blessing in disguise. You’re in Marrakech, after all.
