The Mellah Hotel Overview

Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of riads in Marrakech over the years, but The Mellah Hotel honestly caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best possible way. You know how sometimes you book a place and you’re not quite sure what you’re getting into? Well, this one’s tucked away on Derb Alaati Allah in the old Jewish quarter, which most tourists completely skip over (their loss, really). The narrow alley looks like every other derb in the medina, but once you step through those heavy wooden doors… it’s like someone turned the volume down on the entire city.

The thing about staying in the Mellah is that you’re actually living in a piece of history – I mean, this neighborhood has stories layered into every corner. The hotel itself feels like someone’s incredibly wealthy grandmother designed it with perfect taste, then handed it over to people who actually understand hospitality. The courtyard has this fountain that’s just the right size – not one of those massive splashy ones that keep you awake, but substantial enough that you can hear the water from your room. And honestly, after a day of navigating the chaos around Jemaa el-Fnaa, that sound becomes like meditation. The rooms are what you’d hope for but rarely get – authentic tile work that doesn’t feel like a theme park version of Morocco, and beds that are actually comfortable (you’d be surprised how many riads miss this basic requirement). The bathrooms have proper water pressure too, which… well, if you’ve traveled in Morocco, you know why that matters.

What really sets this place apart though is the staff’s approach to the whole experience. They don’t hover or oversell you on excursions, but when you need something – directions to that spice shop that’s not overrun with tour groups, or the real story about getting to the Saadian Tombs without the hassle – they actually know what they’re talking about. The breakfast happens on the rooftop, and you can see across to the Atlas Mountains on clear days, but more importantly, you can watch the neighborhood wake up. There’s something about seeing the local kids heading to school and hearing the call to prayer from the nearby mosque that makes you feel like you’re part of the rhythm of the place, not just passing through it. The location means you’re a proper walk from the main tourist drag, which keeps things quieter at night but puts you close enough to dive into the medina when you want that energy. Plus, there’s actually decent parking nearby if you’re brave enough to drive in Marrakech (though honestly, just take taxis – it’s worth your sanity). The whole experience feels effortless in a way that only happens when people really care about the details without making a big show of it.

Reviews of The Mellah Hotel

  • Fabulous riad — highly recommended! – Ekaterina from United Kingdom – 27 June 2025 (10/10)

Everything about this hotel is absolutely stunning. The staff are simply the best – warm, attentive, and professional. The food is outstanding, thanks to the incredibly talented Chef Abdesamad.

  • Very nice! – Martina from United Kingdom – 21 June 2025 (10/10)

We loved attention from the staff, cleanliness, facilities and over all it was a very nice experience and I would recommend to everyone I know 🙂

What could be improved: Missing variety of different breakfast options, very dark rooms it was hard to get ready as we couldn’t really see anything, and I would welcome more sun loungers in the upstairs area! (Also the area just didn’t feel safe)

  • Hip, glamorous boutique hotel – Kristiana from United States – 14 June 2025 (10/10)

Glamorous, modern boutique hotel– the styling of the rooms and common areas was trendy and high-end, with lots of thoughtful touches to make it feel more expensive, like fresh flowers and fruit in the rooms, and a date tower with our mint tea! The staff was fantastic– Hind was so kind and funny and helpful; she gave us recommendations for shops and restaurants, booked us an early taxi for our 6 am flight, and communicated with the kitchen staff to make sure my sister had a vegan breakfast. Great sunset views of the medina from the rooftop lounge area.

What could be improved: There was a minor issue with the switches/wiring; it was impossible to have the fan on and the lights off, but staff helped us figure out a workaround/drew a curtain in front of the light.

  • One of the Best Places I’ve Ever Stayed — Truly Unforgettable – Christine from Belgium – 9 June 2025 (10/10)

    Fabulous!!

What could be improved: Nothing! Everything was perfect.

  • Perfect stay at The Mellah Hotel! – Belinda from Australia – 26 May 2025 (10/10)

It was our first time in Marrakesh and our stay at The Mellah Hotel couldn’t have been more perfect! The staff were exceptional – Hind, the House Manager was the perfect host – nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were incredibly comfortable, the food is delicious and the rooftop pool is the perfect way to end a day after exploring Marrakesh. You really feel at home at The Mellah, and we couldn’t recommend it highly enough. A highlight of our holiday!

What could be improved: Nothing, everything was perfect.

  • Amazing stay and Hind was outstanding! – Fiza from United Kingdom – 26 May 2025 (10/10)

Hind was, without a doubt, the most exceptional hotel manager we’ve ever encountered. From the moment we arrived, she greeted us with genuine warmth and made us feel completely at home. She took the time to explain everything we needed to know about the hotel and Marrakech, ensuring we were fully prepared to enjoy our stay.

Knowing we had just arrived from an early flight without eating, she kindly offered us breakfast—such a thoughtful gesture that set the tone for the rest of our experience. Hind went above and beyond throughout our stay, helping us with bookings, arranging taxis, and always being available whenever we had a question or request.

Her kindness and professionalism truly elevated our entire trip. We can’t recommend Hind highly enough—she’s a true gem and made our stay unforgettable.

The food in the riad was incredible, and the hotel amenities were modern, clean, and comfortable. Every member of the staff was equally kind and attentive, making this one of the best hospitality experiences we’ve ever had.

  • Incredible rooms and hospitality – Tom from United Kingdom – 18 May 2025 (10/10)

Very clean, friendly staff and the most accommodating hotel I’ve stayed in.

What could be improved: Having a key to enter at night would be better

  • All was perfect – Paulina from United Kingdom – 13 May 2025 (10/10)

Really great new Riad. First of all staff was very welcoming, kind and attentive. The design & architecture of the Riad is immaculate! Biggest pool we’ve seen, you can actually swim in it which is very rare for Marrakesh. Also wanted to mention Hind, the manager, she is a top notch!

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Exquisite, elegant, charming, intimate and exactly what a Riad experience should be. – Adhir from South Africa – 12 May 2025 (10/10)

Everything. The staff and their hospitality was the best by far. As this is my second visit to Marrekech and I was familiar with the brief and direct service, hotel Mellah was a complete 360. Everyone felt like family, the Riad felt like a family home. It’s new, it’s modern, it’s exquisite and it still maintains the intimacy of home! I really appreciate the chef attending to our late hour meal requests and wow the tangible was exceptional… this wasn’t a restaurant tangine, it was if someone’s mother had made it. Special thanks to Hind, Samad, Yousef and the lovely lady in the kitchen for their hospitality.
