Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of riads in Marrakech, but Villa Dar Chama actually surprised me – and I mean that in the best way possible. The moment you step through that heavy wooden door on Rue el Alaouiyne (which is honestly easier to find than half the addresses in the medina), you’re hit with this incredible sense of space and light. The private pool – and I’m talking actually private, not some tiny shared thing – sits right in the center courtyard, surrounded by these gorgeous traditional arches that cast the most beautiful shadows in the afternoon.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep that authentic Moroccan feel without sacrificing comfort. The rooms have proper air conditioning that actually works (trust me, you’ll appreciate this in summer), and the beds are legitimately comfortable – not those rock-hard mattresses you sometimes get in traditional places. The staff here knows their stuff too; they suggested this little café called Café des Épices that’s maybe a ten-minute walk away, and honestly, it became my morning routine. The location is pretty brilliant actually – you’re close enough to Jemaa el-Fnaa that you can walk there in about fifteen minutes, but far enough away that you won’t hear the drummers at midnight when you’re trying to sleep.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t one of those massive hotel complexes where you feel like just another tourist. There’s something intimate about the whole experience. I spent most evenings just floating in that pool, watching the light change on the rooftop terraces around me, and it felt like I had discovered some secret corner of the city. The breakfast spread is generous without being overwhelming, and they do this incredible fresh orange juice that tastes like sunshine. One morning I chatted with the owner about the restoration work they’d done, and you can tell this place was renovated with real care – the tilework is stunning, the traditional plasterwork is immaculate, but they’ve added modern touches where it actually matters. The Wi-Fi works throughout the property (rare in these thick-walled places), and there’s plenty of hot water, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how often that’s not a given. If you’re looking for that perfect balance between authentic Marrakech charm and actual comfort, this place hits the sweet spot.
