What I loved was how they managed to keep the traditional tilework and carved plaster while still having proper water pressure in the shower – honestly, after some of the places I’ve stayed in Morocco, this felt like a small miracle. The rooftop terrace is where Villa Lilou really shines though. You get these incredible Atlas Mountain views, especially at sunset, and the staff actually knows the perfect time to tell you to head up there (around 6:30 PM in winter, closer to 7:30 in summer). They serve mint tea up there too, and it’s not just tourist-level tea – it’s the real deal, probably because the manager is local and takes that stuff seriously.

What really sets this place apart is the staff’s approach to helping you navigate Marrakech. Instead of just handing you a generic map, they’ll actually tell you things like which entrance to use at the Bahia Palace to avoid the tour groups, or that the best tagine in the neighborhood is at this tiny place called Chez Lamine (not in any guidebook, just two streets over). The concierge, Ahmed, has been working in this area for like twenty years and knows everyone – he even helped me negotiate a fair price for a carpet without that whole exhausting back-and-forth dance. Check-in was smooth, no weird deposit demands or passport holding, and they store your luggage after checkout if you need to catch a late flight. One small thing – the WiFi can be spotty in some of the ground floor rooms, but it’s solid in the common areas and rooftop. Overall, Villa Lilou feels like what you hope a Moroccan riad experience will be like – authentic enough to feel special, comfortable enough that you’re not roughing it, and run by people who actually want you to fall in love with their city.
