You know what? I’ve stayed at plenty of riads in Marrakech, but Villa Safira actually surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked away in this residential area near Dour El Arbi Ben Bouzid – honestly, I had to ask my taxi driver to call for directions because it’s not on the main tourist drag, which turned out to be perfect. The whole neighborhood feels authentically Moroccan without the constant hassle of vendors, and you can actually hear the call to prayer echoing beautifully in the evenings instead of motorbike horns.

The moment you step through that heavy wooden door, it’s like entering a different world. The traditional courtyard design is stunning – I mean, the tilework alone had me taking photos for twenty minutes – but what really got me was how they’ve managed to blend the classic architecture with modern comfort. The pool isn’t huge, but it’s perfectly positioned to catch morning sun, and the water stays surprisingly warm even in December. That hammam though… honestly, it’s better than some of the expensive spa ones I’ve tried in Gueliz. The staff actually knows how to do a proper traditional treatment, not just the tourist version. Fair warning – book your hammam session early because other guests catch on quickly.

What I loved most was how the place runs. The owner clearly lives there part-time because everything feels personal rather than corporate. The breakfast spread changes daily based on what’s fresh at the market, and they’ll actually adjust spice levels if you ask nicely. My room had this incredible view of the Atlas Mountains from the terrace – on clear days you can see the snow-capped peaks, which locals say is getting rarer with climate change. The beds are proper European comfort (thank god), and the AC works perfectly, though you barely need it with the natural cooling from the thick walls and courtyard design. Getting there is easy enough once you know the way – about fifteen minutes from Jemaa el-Fna by taxi, and most drivers know the general area. Just have the exact address ready in Arabic on your phone because “Villa Safira” doesn’t always register. The rating speaks for itself really – it’s one of those places that makes you feel like you discovered something special rather than just booked another hotel.
