First Impressions

Walking through the narrow alleyways of the medina to find Riad Mounlight, I’ll be honest — I was a bit nervous about getting lost. But once you spot Derb Ben Rahmoun El Kebir near Bab Taghzoute, you’re basically there. The entrance is understated in that classic riad way, where you push through heavy wooden doors and suddenly find yourself in this gorgeous central courtyard that makes you forget all about the bustling streets outside. It’s one of those moments where you think, “okay, this is why people come to Marrakech.”

Location & Neighborhood

The location is honestly fantastic — you’re right in the heart of the medina, which means Jemaa el-Fnaa is just a short walk away. I mean, couples seem to really get this since they rate the location 8.8 out of 10, and I can see why. You can easily wander to the souks in the morning, grab some fresh orange juice from the square, and still make it back for a midday rest when the heat gets intense. The Bab Taghzoute area isn’t as touristy as some other parts, so you get that authentic medina feel without being completely overwhelmed by crowds.

What I love about Riad Mounlight is how it manages to feel intimate without being cramped. The traditional architecture — you know, those beautiful tiled floors and carved plasterwork — creates this peaceful atmosphere that’s such a contrast to the energy outside. The courtyard becomes your little sanctuary, and honestly, after a day of exploring the medina’s maze-like streets, you’ll appreciate having this quiet space to decompress. The staff really knows the area well too, which makes a huge difference when you’re trying to navigate the medina for the first time.

The breakfast situation is actually pretty impressive — they’ve got continental, American, and even gluten-free options, plus they can pack it to go if you’re planning an early day trip to the Atlas Mountains or something. I was surprised they have on-site parking too, which is honestly a godsend if you’re driving in Morocco (though I’d still recommend taking a taxi from the airport and walking everywhere once you’re in the medina). The rooms are comfortable in that traditional riad style, with thick walls that keep things cool during those scorching Marrakech afternoons.

  The riad and the room were absolutely brilliant. Charming and very clean. Our room had a shower with body jets!

  Rooftop terrace didn't have views of the city but had comfortable couches and tables to relax or eat.

  Location was good, about 5 minutes walk to the souks.

  The place was beautiful, clean and well located. A safe haven in the adventure that is the Medina, and close enough to taxi stations, which is key to getting around other areas of Marrakech.
  
  The staff was excellent! Before our arrival they were already looking out for us. I had an incident where I forgot my AirPods and charger in the hotel when I headed to the airport and they personally brought it to me. I have no words to express my gratitude.

  We wanted a simple, easily accessible location in the old medina where we could stay for a couple of nights, with break in the middle of the stay to accommodate our trip to the desert. This Riad ticked all the boxes from a practical point of view.
  The staff were extremely kind and helpful, accommodated our early departure by serving us a full breakfast one whole hour early.
  The one reason I’m not giving the place a 10 is the smell coming off the bathroom in the larger bedroom on our second night. I know it’s a perennial problem of plumbing in old riads in Morocco, but it’s a relatively easy fix and it put a slight wrinkle on an otherwise perfect stay.
